THE outstanding feature of a new I. F. and J. tractor-trailer brake coupling introduced by Feeny and Johnson, Ltd., 134-136 Ealing Road, Wembley, Middlesex, is that it is for use on both vacuum and pressure pipelines.
A standard C-type Coupling and automatic shut-off valve are used, but instead of the fitting being fixed to the tractor by its body, it is carried in a special bracket incorporating a lever to allow the connection to be made in a few moments.
Should the trailer break away, pull is exerted on the tail pipe, which has the effect of pulling the body against a spring inside the coupling, thus releasing the retaining balls. This allows the tail pipe to come out and at the same time the pipe is automatically sealed against both vacuum and pressure. Thus, the tractor brakes remain fully effective.
