COMPULSORY testing of goods. vehicles not over 30 cwt. unladen. and 10 or more years old is expected to begin next autumn. This was announced by the Minister of Transport last Friday. The fee will be 15s. and the Certificate of roadworthiness will have to be renewed every year. The tests will apply also to private cars with three or four: wheels, and motor cycles -registered 10 years or more before the 'date when the scheme is introduced.
The Minister is expected to he ready to receive applications from garages for appointment as authorized testing stations by the end of April. Talks on the question with representatives of motoring organizations have still to be held.
. MINISTER APPEALS FOR STAGGERED HOURS
APERSONAL appeal for .staggered hours has been sent, to. 26,000 employers in Central London, by Mr. Harold Watkinson, Minister of Transport. He has asked them to move more workers out of the 8.45-9 a.m. and 5.30-5.45 p.m. peaks.
It is estimated that the concerns he has contacted employ about half of Central London's lm, workers who travel by public -transport during 'peak Periods each -day. The other half work in the 2,000 larger concerns and Government offices, which have al r eady been approached by the Minister's Staggered Hours Committee.
