Despite the government claims that speed compliance is mostly good on single-carriageways. DfT minister Jim Fitzpatrick says: "It is intolerable eight people die on our roads each day."
This number of casualties has prompted suggestions that current speed limits are not adequate on some roads.
RHA chief executive Roger King says: "On single-carriageway A-roads, HG Vs are limited to 40rnph. This can lead to tailbacks behind trucks as cars queue up to overtake. But at least there is a 20mph speed separation between HGVs and other road users. Under the proposals, this will become 10mph — not enough to allow safe, legal overtaking."
