TO a man of Mr. J. B. Mitchell's reticent nature, the task of presiding at a conference of the Road Haulage Association within a fortnight of his election to the chair must have been a trifle daunting. His first ordeal was on Monday evening. when the Press asked him some searching questions about Association policy at a meeting in Blackpool. Any misgivings he may have had were unjustified, because he filled his role amiably and with quiet Scottish dignity.

T HAVE read some obscure conference resolutions in my time, I but until I went to Blackpool I did not begin to understand what this meant: "That this conference is of the opinion that developments in the design of commercial vehicles warrant a revision of the limits of vehicles' gross laden weights, so that their carrying capacities would vary directly with their unladen weights." Come to think of it, I'm not certain that I am much wiser now.
