DEN YIN G charges that the nationalized bus services in the city of Madras were unsatisfactory, Mr. B. Gopala Reddi, Minister of Transport, disclosed that the city undertaking made a profit of Rs. 500,000 last year. The capital outlay was Rs. 5.7m.

Before nationalization, there were 238 vehicles in service, including 40

spare. Each of these had a seating capacity of 21, with provision for eight to 10 standing passengers. Total fleet strength was now .322 vehicles, with accommodation for 8,200 seated and 4,500 standing passengers.

The Minister said that he was examining proposals not only to increase the carrying capacity of the smaller buses, but also to put larger vehicles into service. It has been proposed that these should be powered with oil engines.
