A SHEARING spacer, interposed into existing universal joint shafts of gearbox power take-offs and pumps, etc, has been introduced by Howdon Developments as a means of protection for pto and gearboxes Should a pump or blower seize.
The design is based on a detachable element using standardised shear pins in pairs to vary the release torque. The pins are securely clamped, but are easily replaceable and are Identified by colour coding.
Drive is instantly severed on lock-up, and the sheared element is non-sparking in the free-running state. The element consists of two steel flanges permanently attached to a high-capacity ballbearing giving free-wheeling at speed in the event of a seizure.
