I see that the Distributive Industry Training Board has come up with a bright idea—one that could perhaps be exploited in transport: an award by the DITB for good training. It is not intended so much as an internal booster as a means of bringing home to consumers (that is, the man — and woman — in the street) that a company operates a planned training programme "contributing to the efficiency of the business and standards of service which the customer gets".
The award is accompanied by an emblem for public display but there's an immediate practical benefit, too: if a training audit by the Board's training advisers shows that a company merits the award, it can apply for exemption from levy for two years, or in borderline cases a year. That should bring the award applications rolling in.
