TYRES for light vans and cars should be sold on safety, according to Peter Taylor, marketing services manager of Firestone tyres.
Speaking at the company's annual trade press conference, he went on to say that in spite of the tyre business being in a depressed state, there was still room to expand.
However as far as the original equipment market is concerned, the failure of UK motor manufacturers to maintain their share, not only of domestic but of world production, has resulted in an annual loss of two million tyres to the UK industry.
Dumping by east European manufacturers was also another problem facing British Lyre makers, said Mr Taylor.
Nevertheless, in many respects, the British tyre industry is its own worst enemy, selling tyres at ridiculous prices with out proper margins.
This behaviour, Firestone believes, spells commercial disaster for everyone.
To get the Industry on a firm footing Mr Taylor said, its base must be broadened. Summing up, Mr Taylor said that the UK tyre industry is failing to analyse itself properly and completely and is also failing to take appropriate marketing action to correct the unacceptably bad situation.
