r0 special vehicles for the carriage of metal in bar and sheet form, based on Karrier Gamecock 3-4-ton lowloading chassis, have been supplied to Wilbraham and Smith. Ltd., 260 Gray's Inn Road, London, W.C.I, by Rootes, Ltd. They are powered by Rootes, oil engines and have awheelbase of 11 ft. 9 in.
Built by Manhire Chandler, Ltd., Alperton, Middx, the bodywork has a Luton front incorporating a built-in bolster with movable pegs for the lateral location of bars and so on in transit. On the right there is a lean-to bolster for carrying sheet metal, and movable pegs in the floor keep the sheet in position. The rear half of the floor is steel lined. Internally, the main part of the body is 15 ft. tong, 6 ft. 6 in. wide and 6 ft. high, but use of the Luton bolster enables bars 18 ft. long to be carried with the heavy-duty tailboard closed. The roof has a central sliding panel at the rear, 2 ft. 3 in. wide and 6 ft_ 10 in. long, to cater for crane loading.
The bottom 23 in. of the body sides is boarded inside and out, but the remainder, except for the Luton front, is boarded inside and covered externally with a fixed canvas tilt.
Twin rear-view mirrors arc provided and there are flush-fitting semaphore indicators set in the body sides at the front, with direction arrows mounted at the rear.
