A SPECIAL prize is being made by the President of France, M. Giscard D'Estaing, to the overall winner of the Routiers International heavy transport driving competition. The event is being held in Nice tomorrow and Sunday.
Six drivers each from 11 countries will compete on vehicles provided. There are three classes; rigid, articulated and, for the first time coaches.
The British team, all members of the Continental Freight Drivers' Club, will be: Rigid — Mr Peter Croft (Ford Motor Co truck test operations) and Mr David Baker (Bacc Aluminium Supply Ltd, N. London), Articulated — Mr L. Barham (owner-driver, Northfleet) and Mr Dave Gillam (Ski International Ltd, Manchester); Coach — Mr Roger Wells (self employed, working mainly in Spain) and Mr John Salter (H. T. Horlock & Son, Northfleet, Kent). Mr Gillam was originally entered by his employer as a reserve, all expenses for himself and his wife paid, plus a bonus and salary rise should he win certain prizes. He took his place in the team last week.
