LOCAL authorities and structural or civil engineers will find plenty to interest them at the Public Works Exhibition opening at London's Olympia on Monday. This preview, based on information supplied to us by manufacturers, gives some idea of what to look for.

The first British-built Comm-Sita refuse c011ection vehicle will be shown by Derby Commercials Ltd (stand K9). The Comm-Sita 6000 has a I 6cum (571 cu ft) body and refuse is compacted against the ejector plate by a vertically mounted rammer with paddles that sweep refuse from the rearmounted hopper into the main body.

The crew cab has a folddown dual-passenger seat at the front and can accommodate seven men excluding driver.

The body is mounted on an 3.4 m (11.3 ft) wheelbase, Seddon municipal chassis.

Environment conscious municipal men should take a close look at the Volvo Silent Knight refuse collector (stand L7) designed to produce low engine emission and vehicle noise. The City F86 chassis features the turbocharged TD 70D engine, which is fitted with a special exhaust pressure regulator to reduce emissions and smells, especially at engine tick-over speeds. Extensive use of sound proofing material reduces both in-cab and exterior noise.

The chassis exhibited with a Norha refuse collection body though it can accommodate Shark and Colectomatic equipment or be modified to take other types of municipal body.

The Hush-Packer from Ronald Perham Ltd (stand L12) is a lightweight refuse collection body designed to carry 5. 7 tonnes (5.6 tons) payload when fitted to chassis plated to 13.2/14.2 tonnes (13/ 14 tons) gvw. The loading hopper is swept at four-second intervals by an hydraulically powered compaction blade. The refuse is discharged by tipping the body which has radiused corners to prevent sticking.

Whale Tankers are making their show debut and are exhibiting their new Streetwalker miniature gully emptier. It has a twocompartment tank, one for 295 litres (65 gal) of clean water and the other for effluence. The equipment has been simplified to minimise cost. The gully arm has a flexible section rather than a swivel joint. The flexible section is long enough to allow the rigid section end to be used to a depth of 1.7m (5.5 ft) any where on a 180 degree arc at the rear of the machine. The gully arm can he parked, with the rigid end horizontal, in either of the two hose trays: the gully pipe valve is operable from the rear.

Changeover from suction to pressure can be made for each side at the rear of the Streetwalker. The tank and equipment are mounted on a sub-frame and the whole assembly can be lifted off the vehicle chassis after removing bolts from each side.

Other Whale equipment will he on show.

Yorkshire Vehicles Ltd (stand K16) will be introducing a new blow-back feature for its gully and cesspool emptying tankers. The blowback system permits the dry sludge in gullies to be 'quickly agitated and emulsified.

Emptiers also have a pusher plate to depress wet sludge, to drain off excess water and discharge the dry sludge through the rear door.

Bulk collection of leaves is catered for with a new pump by Helpmate (stand CC2).

It can be attached to or trailed behind a collection vehicle; the litter is sucked up through a 127 mm (5 in) or 203 mm (8in) WanderHose and then deposited in the collection vehicle via a rear-mounted 203 mm (8 in) hose. F. W. Wheatley Trailers (stand Z7) have two new trailer exhibits. The first is a 4 t n hydraulically operated cable-drum machine that can handle drums up to 2.4m (8 ft) diameter; the second, the Sovereign 4-ton trailer, is designed for general use and features an all-steel body.

Something for nothing is the theme for the trailer cum mobile store from Newbo Plant (stand E I ). Capable of carrying up to 0.6 tonne (0.5 ton), the single-axle trailer is fully enclosed and is lockable. Overall trailer height is 1.8m (6ft) and a heavy-duty hardwood floor and a tailgate are included in the specification.

Designed to spread grit in front of any vehicle to which it is fitted, the new bulk hopper road gritter from Econ Engineering Ltd (stand F3) achieves its forward spray by using a cross-feed conveyor and a sidemounted single distributor mounted forward of the hopper. The gritter has a self-contained hydraulic power pack and the range of grit spray is controlled by the speed of the vehicle to which it is fitted.

Mobile on-site maintenance is Orovided by Tecalemit Garage Equipment Co Ltd (stand E10) with its trailer-mounted vehicle maintenance unit,
