AS PART of an overall component rationalisation plan, Leyland Vehicles are to transfer production of the 11and 13-ton hub reduction axles from Leyland to the old Albion plant at Scotstoun.
The axles will be produced to the same basic design as the existing Albion mediumvveight axles which have pressed casings.
Currently, the Leyland axle casing is a three-piecb design using a cast-iron bowl with steel axle tubes welded on, a process which Leyland says is no longer cost-effective.
The heavy range Leyland axles will be built at the same factory which is scheduled to start production of ZF gearboxes under licence in 1982.
