FOURTEEN trailers with automatic coupling — six Fleetline boxvans and eight flat platforms — have recently been supplied to Boots of Nottingham by Scammell Trailers. • The 6.98m (22ft 11in) vans are plated at 12.5 tonnes gtw and are used to transport bulk goods from the Nottingham factory to a redistribution centre in the same area.
The 8.5m (27ft 11in) platforms are used for palletised loads of raw materials including chemicals from outside suppliers. Both platforms and vans are fitted with two-line air brakes and Anchorlok mechanical park brake which operates automatically when the trailer is disconnected from the tractive unit.
The van bodywork was designed to Boots' own specification and features a reinforced front bulkhead with double the normal posts at 305mm (12in) centres lined with 6mm (0.24in) hardwood ply inside.
The interior of the aluminium panelled vans is fitted with Load Lok tracking which also serves to reinforce the van sides.
Access to the rear is provided by a wide slat roof sliding shutter which, Scammell claims, provides a larger loading aperture than a roller. It also allows loading in confined spaces where conventional doors could not be fully opened.
