HAULIERS concerned about vehicle maintenance problems may be interested in a recent statement by Mr. W. P. S. Ormond, the Eastern Licensing Authority. Speaking at the annual dinner of the RI-IA Eastern area at Peterborough recently, Mr. Ormond made two points apropos vehicle maintenance. " My vehicle examiners are out to help you, if you have any problems ", he said. and there are no charges for their services. If any haulier present is unable to proceed with additional maintenance premises for lack of planning permission, I shall be very pleased to support the application." Clearly, this offer of help could greatly assist hauliers who genuinely wish to maintain their vehicles at maximum efficiency, and hauliers in other areas would be well advised to seek backing from their LAs for urgent improvements to maintenance premises. Prohibitions are unlikely to diminish, when the additional 100 vehicle examiners have "sharpened their pencils ". Whilst it may not be a good defence to blame inadequate maintenance premises, it would certainly help any haulier intending to build a workshop, and who awaits planning permission, if his LA is aware of, and has supported,
the planning application. J.D.
