ASTATEMENT has been issued by Gateshead Corporation denying that an agreement had been reached between "all parties" for the introduction of 'motorbuses in place of trams on the through service from Gateshead and Felting to Newcastle
[he statement pointed out that under the Gateshead Trolley • Bus Act of 1938, the Gateshead and District Train -ways Co., Ltd., was still under an obligation to substitute trolleybuses for the trams, but alleged that the company mow favoured motorbuses because they would cost only £200,000, compared with a much larger sum for trolleybuses.
Gateshead Corporation would agree to motorbuses being used provided that its rights were safeguarded.
• The statement criticized the company for lodging a Bill in Parliament to authorize the use of motorbuses without first securing agreement with Gateshead.
The terms of an agreement between
the company and Newcastle Corpora tion for the running' of motorbuses over the tram routes stated that the agreement would last for 10 years; it did not prejudice the. corporation's right to operate trolleybuses in Gateshead and Felling, and both parties would fix fares in their own areas.
