JUDGMENT was reserved at the conelusion of the second day's hearing last week into charges against Road Services (Caledonian), Ltd., who faced a total of 187 alleged excise evasion offences. Twenty-five lorries and 15 articulated vehicles are involved.
Refuting allegations that vehicles when weighed were found to be more than the weight as shown in their registration books, Mr. A. Callender, traffic manager of the company, said that over-weights in the rigid vehicles could have been caused by the accumulation of dirt arid oil and the substitution of heavier parts on repairs.
The excess weights of the articulated vehicles could be due to traffic personnel not taking sufficient care when allocating trailers to tractors. No deliberate attempt had been made to avoid paying the appropriate excise duty.
