A report by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), which was published a decade ago, concluded that the Highway Code should provide better information on what braking distances HGVs require and the room they should be given on the roads.
Meanwhile, road safety group Brake is currently campaigning for graduated driver licensing in the UK, which would mean a comprehensive three-stage system of learning to drive.
“This could encompass a section on safe driving alongside trucks,” says Ellen Booth, campaigns officer. It’s really important that vehicle users, pedestrians and cyclists are aware of the perspective of truck drivers and how they can help drivers of larger vehicles to spot them.”
