TWENTY-ONE Labour M.P.s this I week tabled a Parliamentary motion calling for total relief from fuel tax for road passenger transport undertakings. Led by Mr. Frank MeLeavy (East Bradford), they make a direct attack on the £30m. now being paid to the Exchequer by passenger transport.
Their motion, designed to catch the Chancellor's eye as he shapes the Budget for 1962-3, states: That this House expresses its concern about the continued high level of fuel oil taxation which falls with unfair severity upon the road passenger transport undertakings; and in view of the serious curtailments of services both in the urban and rural areas, due to heavy fuel oil taxation, which is causing great inconvenience to the travelling public, considers that total tax relief is now urgently necessary if the decline in this essential public service is to be arrested."
