PAA NOTHER model has been added to the range of thirdaxle units produced by T.G.R. Motors, Clitheroe, Lanes, one of the Primrose Group of companies. It is to be known as the Primrose third axle. The manufacturers state that it will fit any make of chassis, and that if the chassis does not need to be -lengthened, the only modification necessary is to drill holes for bolting the unit in position.
Comprising two coil springs of 750 lb. per in. rating, and double-acting hydraulic dampers working on a swinging arm, the unit is said to give an increase in capacity of up to 50 per cent. on most vehicles, and makes possible lengthening of the chassis to afford greater platform area.
When a vehicle is loaded, 11 in. of movement will be taken up by the normal rear-axle springs before any load is applied to the third axle, whilst the full movement of the normal rear axle will be exhausted before the third axle will bottom.
A spring can be changed readily. It is necessary to remove only two tie bolts and jack-up the chassis, when the spring will fall from its 1i-busing.
The manufacturers quote a price of £297 for fitting the unit, less wheels and tyres, to a customer's vehicle, but it is to be marketed in pack form so that operators may modify their own vehicles.
