multi-million-pound long-term contract to TNT Logistics for managing its deliveries. to the UK mainland replacement market.
The deal is said to be one of the most significant third-party contracts to be awarded this year; it is the first of its kind to be made by Michelin, which previously relied on in-house distribution. Brian Moulton, Michelin UK's head of commercial distribution, says: "In choosing TNT Logistics Michelin is confident that it will be working in partnership with a most progressive and innovative logistics company."
TNT Logistics will operate a dedicated fleet of 64 vehicles including 27 new demountable drawbar rigs, with 70 staff.
Using dedicated drive-axle tyres rather than an all-round steer-axle pattern can extend tyre life by 23%, says Michelin. While the convenience of an allround tyre may suit operations where many tyre changes are needed, Michelin believes that most operators would benefit from fitting dedicated tyres because any additional stocking costs would be more than offset by savings in tyre replacement.
The company adds that operators who do not recut are missing out on the most fuel-efficient part of the tyre's life: with regrooving guides there should be no problem cutting tyres to the correct depth.
Even if the breaker band is rusted the damaged layers can be replaced during the Remix process, says Michelin.
