A WOMEN'S outing has been cancelled II by Carlisle bus owner Mr. Andrew Hogg—because Ribble Motor Services Ltd. wanted to he "helpful". The £13 IOs booking was made by Carlisle branch of the WRVS to take 39 members on a Lake District tour. But a senior Ribble official spotted an item in a newspaper about the trip.
He rang Mr. Hogg to tell him that the article, a weekly WRVS bulletin, amounted to advertising—illegal under Mr. Hogg's private-hire-only licence.
"The item was not an advert it was not
paid for or inserted by me," said Mr. Hogg. "I didn't know a thing about it. But the MoT agreed with Ribble's interpretation. I thought it best to cancel the trip."
A Ribble spokesman said: "It was done only because we knew Mr. Hogg would not know anything about the article. We wanted to warn him that it was illegal. We were only trying to be helpful."
