IP The results of a concentrated assault on a-cab noise will be seen in the Atkinsons at he Commercial Motor Show next month. lipplication of soundproofing, the blanking if holes and the gaitering of controls that Pass through the floor are said to have tchieved a cab noise level of only 84dbA — vith a Gardner engine, but in the worst possible noise-producing conditions.
The underside of the floor, the front cuttle and dash structure and the engine :ompartment have been covered in polyether foam, skinned with pvc, and the tar cab panel has now been covered with ;ound-deadening foam. This treatment is already being applied to production models; Earls Court will be the first public showing of the revised cabs.
At the same time a "non-sweat" brushed-nylon covering is being introduced for the sprung driving seat, the rear windows are in Sundym glass and dual mirrors are being fitted to both sides of the cab. Tractive units for maximum gcw will be displayed but the revived interest in rigids will be revealed by the exhibiting of Gardner-engined sixand eight-wheelers for 24 and 30 tons respectively. Manoeuvrability is a particular feature of the eight-wheelers, the Defender with 21ft wheelbase, for example, having a turning circle of 78ft.
