THEIR intention to close garages at I. Old Kent Road, Putney Bridge and Clapham in the autumn has been announced by London Transport. Further economy moves include the total withdrawal of 22 routes and two partial withdrawals—a nine per cent, cut in services.
The measures have been the subject of discussion between the Executive and the Transport and General Workers' Union.
It was stated that these steps were being taken with the object of adjusting services to demand, in the light of the financial position of the L.T.E. There would be no redundancy of drivers and conductors. Redundancy on the maintenance side would be discussed with the Union. The plan could save £2,750,000.
The Executive's proposals will be discussed, inter alia, at a further meeting with Union lepresentatives next Wednesday. There is an obvious connection between redundancies and wages claims, which may well have more serious effects on country busmen than on those working in the central area.
