QUBSIDIES from public funds to L) maintain transport services cannot be justified, the Northern Ireland Senate were told last week by Lieut.-Col. A. R. G. Gordon, Leader of the House. He was moving' the second reading of the Transport Bill, which will transfer the Northern Ireland section of the Great Northern Railway to the Ulster Transport Authority, and will make some amendments to the U.T.A.'s powers and duties.
Mr. John McGlade claimed that the railways had had a raw deal and asked why they could not be subsidized. He pointed out, that buses were subsidized through public money beingspent on roads.
Mr. Joseph Cunningham replied that public money was now being squandered on keeping up railway services which were not patronized. Lack of passengers had killed the railways.
