ROAD Transport companies in South Wales are to be urged to set up a vigilante system to help track down lorry thieves.
The plan is to set up a Vehicle Observer Corps whose members would be lorry drivers. They would look out for stolen vehicles reported to them by police authorities.
Details of how a scheme could-be operated were given by George Burrows, RHA security officer, to a sub-committee of the crime prevention panel. The Committee chairman, Ivor Cassam, said there was no doubt in his mind that this was a desirable thing and should be proce-eded with as quickly as possible.
Det Chief Inspector Williams Aslett, head of crime prevention in South Wales, said he could see no reason why the police should not co-operate with the scheme.
The sub-committee is to recommend to the full crime prevention panel that an observer corps be introduced by the RHA in South_ Wales.
