BUS CREWS in Inverclyde could be in for a shock. For 19 community councils are angrily demanding a better bus service, and it has been suggested that minibuses may be introduced unless the subsidised bus company can provide a better service.
Regional councillor Alex Lyall has complained about cancelled buses to the Western SMT management at Greenock. He was told there was little the company can do to improve the service as the main causes are staff shortages and absenteeism.
On one day, for example, 25 drivers and 37 conductresses were off work. The depot was already understaffed by 11, and 28 were on holiday. Councillor Lyall said: "The irregularity of buses is intolerable. If the bus companies cannot provide a reasonable service, then alternatives will have to be found."
Martin Horn, traffic controller at Greenock, said: "Young people do not want a job with shift work."
