which had twice the capacity of its present one and whose business had not increased, should not be granted the variation, argued the objectors in a case before the North Western LA in Manchester last week.

J. F. Parker Ltd. of Altrincham was a scrap metal merchant which undertook industrial waste clearance for its customers, said Mr. C. J. Coventry, a director of the company. It now wished to put onto its B Licence an 111-ton vehicle fitted with a Telehoist Load Lugger which would enable it to deliver 20 cu.yd.-capacity containers to customers as opposed to the 8 cu.yd. ones possible with the present vehicle.

The service was for long-standing local customers and for Mackamax Aluminium Ltd., of Runcorn for which it had just started working. He expected the vehicle would be used for only 10 per cent of its time for hire and reward. The present vehicle was engaged 80 per cent on the company's own business and earned an average of £100 a month for haulage. Due to the need to negotiate small premises, it was necessary to retain the existing vehicle, said Mr. Coventry.

Mr. C. Mitchell, director, Swan Road Rollers Ltd., said he wanted a larger container needing emptying once a fortnight instead of weekly.

The LA refused the application.i
