nECISIONS which strongly increase
the chances of establishing a UK pallet pool were taken on Monday at a meeting in London of representatives of transport and allied interests. It was agreed that any eventual pool scheme would be based on standard 40 in. by 48 in. pallets and that, since an attempt to create a national scheme in one step would be almost unmanageable. a subcommittee should first examine the possibility of a pool covering one major industry. The industry chosen is the biggest pallet user—food distribution— and the sub-committee will cover the use of pallets in a scheme embracing especially grocery and provisions and other "supermarket" items.
Representatives of other interests will now wait for the sub-committee to report back to the chairman of the full committee. Mr. G. B. Carlton, of Barnbergers Pallet and Cases Ltd. He is meanwhile expected to sound out Government opinion on the possibility of official support for a national pool; it is not known whether -NEDC finance might be available.
The chief problem is to find a sizeable sponsor for the pool and although BR and BRS are interested they would need
to be convinced of its commercial soundness before hazarding capital.
Mr. Carlton feels that, with favourable progress, there could be a trial scheme in actual operation in the grocery trade within six months and a full pallet pool for this industry•in under two years.
