• Three specially equipped ERF vehicles have gone into service with the North Eastern Electricity Board. The units are Gardner powered 16-ton-gross chassis each fitted with a HIAB type 950 crane with a lifting capacity of 5+ tons.
The vehicles supplement man-power for such operations as cable laying, street lighting and telegraph pole installation and for the removal and installation of transformers at sites in and around the York area.
Each of the crane units, weighing 35 cwt., is hydraulically operated and mounted direct on to the vehicle chassis frame members. The vehicles are fitted with 18ft long dropside platform bodies which are used to carry installation tools as well as the materials.
When the vehicles are in use special hydraulic stabilizer legs, located at the back of the vehicle, are extended to provide a rigid mounting for the crane unit.
