Mr Keith Steel of Martells of Sutton dealt with redundancies and warned the delegates that when redundancy was contemplated they must first consult all of the trade unions which they recognise.
He looked at the question of redundancy pay entitlements and periods of notice Where 10 or more employees at one establishment are to be dismissed within 30 days they were required to begin consultation not less than sixty days ' before the first dismissal was timed to take place For over 100 employees the period was 90 days consultation Mr Steel said that during consultation the employer was required to discuss the reason for the redundancy, and the • number and job description of the employees to be made redundant. The total number of employees in any one job description area and the method which he proposed to adopt of consulting the employees who were to be dismissed and the proposed method of carrying out the dismissals including the period they were to take effect also had to be discussed.
