Two New Devices WhichMake for Simplified Handling and Increased Efficiency
I'VE have received from Sheffiex, Ltd., VI' Sheffield, brief details of two new devices, both of which have for their objective a lessening of the manual effort required in refuse collection, coupled with the hygienic character: istics associated with the company's refuse-collection equipment.
The first of these new devices is concerned with the lifting of fully loaded bins into the vehicle; work which, 'eventually., produces fatigue even when men are of a high physical standard.
The principle involved is that of a counterbalance, the maximum a pproxi• mate weight of 120 lb. represented by' the loaded bin, having a counterweight 'of 90 lb. The total weight'of the unit
is about 1 cwt. • An improved means for loading and packing refuse in a dustless manner, and without manual effort, forms the second contribution of the company towards easing the lot of the worker. whilst at • the same time making for greater efficiency.
In a new design of dustless-loading equipment, an auxiliary container is housed in a rear compartment, being so arranged that it can be raised from a low level to the requisite height for transferring the contents to the body of the vehicle by mechanical or other means.
The container is so suspended in it5
carrier that, when it arrives at the required height, it is caused to rotate' to an angle sufficient to effect a transference of the refuse into the body of the collector.
Running longitudinally on each side of the vehicle, near the top, are tracks in which a wheeled trolley is moved backward and forward by hydraulic pressure. It is the movement of this trolley which causes the raising and lowering of the container, whilst, at the same time, a plate attached to the trolley serves to pack the refuse progressively as the vehicle becomes loaded.
In the present case, the pump employed for tipping purposes also supplies the necessary pressure for operating the trolley gear.
