truck .1-1, with a heaped capacity of 18 cu. yd. has been developed by Scammell Lorries, Ltd., to augment their existing range of dump trucks—the Sherpa 4 x 2, the Himalayan 6 x 4 and the Mountaineer 4 x 4. The new vehicle has Telehoist body and tipping gear, and is based on a 15-ft. 10.5-in.-wheelbase chassis. An alternative model with six-wheel drive is available also, and in addition a Super Constructor version can be supplied, this having an eight-speed semi-automatic gearbox.
The standard power unit is the Leyland 0.680 Power-Plus 200-b.h.p. 11.1-litre engine, driving through a 16.25in. single-plate clutch, Scammell six-speed constant-mesh gearbox and two-speed auxiliary box. The rear axles are doublereduction assemblies mounted on unsprung centrally pivoted walking beams, whilst the front axle is a Kirkstall assembly with the usual Constructor type of transverse centrally pivoted semielliptic spring. The Marles steering is hydraulically assisted and full air braking is fitted.
The chassis frame has 12.375-in. by 3.5-in. by 0.5-in, pressed side members, with six cross-members bolted in position, plus a tubular front bumper. The 44-gal. fuel tank is mounted behind the cab, and the standard tyres are 14.0020 (20-ply) with twins on the bogie, alternative to which are 14.00-24, or Michelin Metallic 0.20 or 0.24.
The standard type of Scammell normal-control pressed-steel cab is supplied, and the Telehoist body is a welded assembly of 0.25-in, mild-steel plate, the bottom plate having a 2-in. hardwood filler and a 0.375-in, renewable mild-steel top plate above it to form a sandwich floor.
The body has 3-ft. 1.5-in.-deep sides, and' the internal width at the headboard is 8 ft. 4 in., widening to 8 ft. 8 in. at the scow end. Telelever HDL7 tipping gear is employed, this giving a maximum tipping angle of 70° in approximately 12 see., with powered return in 10 sec. The gear is mounted on a sub-frame so that tipping stresses are not transmitted to the main chassis frame, and the two rams are 7-in.-bore single-extension units.
