A NEW, specially strengthened safety
glass to give added protection against smash and grab raiders has been developed by Triplex Safety Glass Co., Ltd. One of the chief uses for the glass will be as windscreens in security vehicles.
At a demonstration of the new glass at the company's Willesden factory last Friday, a succession of tests were made, including an attack by a 2-1b. hammer, which simply bounced off the glass without breaking it at the initial blow and produced only a small hole after many minutes' battering.
Mr. B. Heath, the company's managing director, said: "The new security glass has a vinal interlayer 60 thousandths of an inch thick, and gives maximum protection to personnel, merchandise and property. It never discolours from age or exposure and is impervious to normal temperature variations." The cost of laminated security glass is about three times that of plate glass.
The vinal interlayer is of polyvinyl butyral, a tough elastic material which will stretch by 300 per cent before breaking and provides a bond even after the glass is broken.
Compared with plate glass, the new "Bandit Glass" provides visibility reduced by only 2 per cent—much less than the eye can detect.
