THE diamond jubilee of Bradford City Transport was celebrated last week, when the transport committee and guests paid an official visit to the Thornby works and depot, and later lunched at the town hall.
The undertaking began operating eketric trams in 1898, and later took over the steam tram routes operated by a private company, converting them to electricity. At its peak, the department had 250 trams running over 59 miles of route.
The first trolleybus service was started in 1911, and motorbuses came on the scene 15 years later. Trams were finally abandoned in 1950, and today the fleet of trolley and motor vehicles numbers about 400.
