• Parcelforce has lost a major Reader's Digest contract. accounting for 8% of its traffic, to White Arrow.
The Union of Communication Workers warns that up to 1,000 driving and administration jobs could be lost—it hopes this will be possible without any compulsory redundancies.
Parcelforce cannot yet evaluate the impact of the loss. The company says it let the magazine contract go after deciding it
would not "buy the traffic". "The price got driven to a level where we weren't prepared to play," says Parcelforce. White Arrow declined to comment.
The loss of the Reader's Digest contract comes as anoth er disappointment for Parcelforce's management following last month's Government decision to drop privatisation plans. Parcelforce is struggling to reach its break-even target for the year ending March 1995.
