KNOWN as the Skid-Stac, an attachment for fork-lift trucks has been developed by Conveyancer Fork Trucks, Ltd., Warrington, which enables the conventional type of flat pallet with a depth of 6 in. to be replaced by a board of about Tit in. Stacking space is thereby saved.

The low weight of the boards increases the payload that can be carried by vehicles, and the return of empties is simplified. Cost compares favourably with that of conventional pallets and the boards have a comparatively long life. They are also reparable.

The attachment replaces the fork carriage bars of the truck and comprises a load-carrying plate and a pull-push rack fitted with a gripper blade. The rack and blade are hydraulically operated.

When the truck is being driven up to a stack, the operative moves a selector lever which causes the rack to travel forward with its gripper jaws open. The mast of the truck is then tilted forward and the toe of the gripper blade inserted beneath the reinforced flap of the board. Return movement of the lever closes the gripper blade on the flap and the board is pulled on to the carrying plate. For travelling, the mast is tilted back to the normal position.

The sequence of operations of the push-pull grippingblade mechanism is controlled by a valve, which ensures that the blade grips the board before it is retracted and that the board is released before the rack is extended. The plate is tapered and polished to facilitate loading, and can be supplied in various forms to the requirements of users
