THE NUMBER OF trucks using the Eurotunnel shuttle service fell by more than 30,0(X) in the first quarter of 2(X)6 compared to the same period last year, a drop of 9%.
However, the company remains unperturbed by the fall. saying 2005's figures were artificially high due to problems at Calais, which led to more traffic through the tunnel.
Despite the fall, Eurotunnel says it was able to compensate for the drop in volume by charging more to those that did use the service. Although the number of trucks fell by 9%. the amount Eurotunnel earned from its shuttle business in total was only down 1%, from £70.4m to £69.7m. Both years were better than 2004. when revenue for the first quarter was £65.8m.
