The Minister of Transport announces that drivers on the I3odmin-Derby road (A.38) will, in about two years' time, be able to avoid the narrow, congested length where it passes through the shopping centre of Erdington, Birmingham. A new by-pass, for which the Minister has made a grant from the Road Fund to the Birmingham City Council, is to be constructed at a cost of over £115,000. The new road will he about half a mile long and 110 .ft. wide, with dual 24-ft. carriageways, wide footpaths and verges, and a central reservation for the tramways.
At Leicester, Groby Road, the chief route from that city to the industrial area in the west of the county, is to be reconstructed for a distance of over a mile, at a cost of £64,500. The road will be widened to 80 ft. with dual carriageways, separated by a grass verge and bordered by footpaths. It is part of Route A.50, and carries traffic of over 11,000 tons a day.
A traffic roundabout is to be constructed at Old Town Cross Roads, Beaconsfield, Bucks, a busy junction on the London-Oxford road (A.40). The War Memorial, at the approach to the Winds,-r end, will be removed to another site.
