-IERE CAN be little doubt that the Freight Transport isociation has served its members well over the years. Its rvice departments offer a diverse range and its political uscle has been used discreetly and has been moderately fective.
But has the time come for change? The FTA's role is to incern itself with the transport user rather than the provider. ) own-account operators need to own their vehicles or lould they hire-in from specialist suppliers?
The thought of an own-account transport manager losing his ihicles could lead to multiple cardiac arrests in that sector. Jt own-account operators do not require transport managers, ther they require distribution managers.
Own-account operators do not have to own vehicles to move )ods. They can be hired-in more economically and be better ilised.
It is unnecessary and uneconomic for own-account )erators to invest their capital in transport fleets when so any vehicles are standing idle. Added to this is the very .essing need for wise capital investment.
There is no better time for the FTA to take another step rward in its development by Jdying the requirement of its 3mbers and potential sources of poly. Their role will be no less portant because it is different.
