THIS week Mr. Leslie Spriggs (Labour St. A Helens) asked for legislation to give protectiOn against the dismissal of a driver who reported a defective lorry or any other type of vehicle, or an employee who called the Ministry of Transport inspectors to check an overloaded vehicle.
Mr. Stephen Swingler, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport, said that Mrs. Castle did not think that this was a matter which could satisfactorily be solved by legislation and he was writing to Mr. Spriggs about the particular cases he raised.

IT would be inappropriate "at this stage" A to refer increases in Scottish bus fares to the National Board for • Prices and Incomes, according to Mr. William Rodgers, Under Secretary for Economic Affairs.
Why his Department believed this,was, he told MPs, explained in replies which had been sent to Scottish local authorities who had written suggesting that the increased fares should be referred to the Board.
