In Addition to Well-tried Models Which Have Been Improved in Detail, Several New Chassis are Being Marketed in the Forthcoming Year

FOR 1932 four important additions on the goods-carrying side are being made to the manufacturing programme of Karrier Motors, Ltd., Karrier Works, Huddersfield. The new chassis carry the names Victor, Protector, Consul and Colossus, but apart from the introduction of these machines the range is, in many respects, similar to that available during 1931, although certain improvements in detail design have been effected in different models, with the object of increasing their road performance.

The three-wheeled models, introduced during the past year for the purpose of replacing the horse for local delivery work, will continue to occupy prominence. These machines are known as the Colt and the Cob, and are propelled by a 7 h.p. twin-cylindered engine ; they deal with 2-ton and 3-ton loads respectively.

In order to permit this type to deal with larger loads, a Cob Major, with a 10 h.p. four-cylindered power unit, is being introduced to haul 4-ton loads. In this connection it should be noted that a series of Karrier-built trailers is to be marketed for use with the Cob models. The range of three-wheelers is completed by the Colt Major, in which a 10 h.p. engine is also employed.

Of the new models, the Victor is a 21-tonner and the Protector a 3-tonner, and both are four-wheeled freighters. The engine of each is the well-tried 31-48 h.p. four-eylindered unit, which is mounted in a strong frame of good depth. Each chassis has mechanicaltype universal joints in the transmission line, and the final drive is by overhead worm. The hand and foot brakes both take effect on the rear wheels. The wheelbase of the Victor is 12 ft., whilst the Protector is 1 ft. longer. Both chassis are of the normal-drive type, and are mounted on 32-in. by 6-in, pneumatics, twins at the rear. A forward driving position is available as an alternative for each model.

The Consul is a 61-tonner which, with its optional types, replaces the K5, K6 and K7 models. For mounting in this chassis a 60-80 h.p. four-cylindered engine or a six-cylindered unit developing up to 110 h.p. is available. The -wheelbase of the chassis, with a forward driving position, is 16 ft. The design incorporates a stoutly assembled frame, a massive rear axle of the beveland-spur double-reduction type, together with a torque member through which driving and braking stresses are taken, and a servo system of braking on the rear wheels.

With an alternative wheelbase of 15 ft., the Consul will accommodate tipping bodies carrying 6-ton pay-loads and, when equipped with a subsidiary gearbox and a worm-driven rear axle, it can also haul a 6-ton trailer.

The last of the new goods models, the Colossus, is a six-wheeler with a Pay-load capacity, of 12 tons; it has a wheelbase of 17 ft. 1 in. and only the forward axle of the bogie assembly is driven. The propeller shaft is enclosed by a stout tube which transmits the braking torque of the driven axle direct to the frame, whilst an additional member deals with the braking torque of the non-driven axle. In this model, too, optional power units with four or six cylinders are available. It should be stated that, when required, an overdrive gearbox can be fitted, this, of course, being an extra. The tyre equipment consists of 40-in. by 8-in. pneumatics.

Of the goods chassis which show no great alteration there is the CYR-type —a short-wheelbase 21-tommr, which has won much success in municipal circles. Its layout is such as to give maximum body space with minimum overhang, ease of mancevrability and a low-loading level—all features which are desirable for refuse-collection work. The chassis is of the forward-control pattern and its appearance has been considerably enhanced by a new type of radiator.

Little change has taken place in the design of the G114 4-tonner and the 0115 5-touner, but the Karrier 41-68 h.p four-cylipdered engine incorporated in each model has been increased in efficiency.

The medium and large capacity rigid frame sixwheelers, known as the M6 and KW6 models, are again listed, the former —a War Department subsidy 5 tonner being a cross-country type, whilst the latter is a 0-ton road vehicle in which a four or sixcylindered engine • can he incorporated. Each of these models is produced with alternative driving positions.

To complete the goods products, there is the TT-type tractor-trailer, which has been modified only in detail.

Turning now to the Karrier passenger range, there are four distinct models, marketed under the names Coaster, Chaser Six, Monitor and Consort. The Coaster is a four-cylindered chassis and it is built take 28-seater bodies, whilst the Chas Six is a forward-drive model to carry single-deck bodies with a maximum seating capacity of 35 persons. In the latter case six-cylindered engine developing* up to 110 h.p. is used. Both models are equipped with four-wheel brakes controlled through a servo.

The Monitor and Consort are built to carry double-deck bus bodies, the former being a four-wheeler and the latter a six-wheeler. These models have maxi

mum seating capacities for 50 and 68 passengers respectively. They are both of the forward-drive type and have exeaptionally deep frames and servo-braking systems. It should be noted that, with an increased wheelbase of 19 ft.17 ft. 6 ins, is the standard dimension— the Consort can be used as the basis of a single-decker for 40 persons.

The company's range of passenger models is completed by single-deck and double-deck trolley-buses known as the E4 four-wheeler and the E6 six-wheeler, both being marketed in conjunction with that well-known concern of electrical engineers, .Clough, Smith and Co., Ltd. The products of Karrier Motors, Ltd., have always been prominent in the municipal field, and several models will be manufactured in 1932. The RSC sweeper and collector has been much improved and now embodies a curved broom. The RB-type sweepers will continue to figure in the range.

It should be mentioned that many of the goods and passenger models can be equipped with different types of Gardner oil engine.
