• Two prototype closecoupled 18m drawbars, both based on Leyland Daf FA 95.310 air-sprung chassis and capable of carrying 32 pallets have been put into service by Smiths Crisps.
To ensure maximum frame length, L-Daf's SVO Centre moved the engines forward by 100mm and using Ray Smith's Supavol pneumatic coupler a 152mm gap between the eight-metre Tidd Trailer bodies is maintained.
Aimed at speeding up loading times, the 20mm GRP box van bodies have slim Dover Nyloy shutters, operated by Henderson air switches. An extra one at the front of the trailer allows through loading of the 16m combined length with 32 pallets which takes around 18 minutes.
Air suspension on the Tidd centre-bogie trailer keeps the floors level and aligned, and a bridge plate covers the gap.
As an added safety measure, extra lights and metre-long reflectors are fitted down each side.
