a couple of weeks
ago, the Hawk brought to your attention the case of the Irish motorists who escaped a driving ban by donating money to charity. (CM 31 July). Well it is happening again—in a different court, but with the same judge. This time, Judge John Brophy at Dunshaughlin Court allowed two motorists to escape a ban when they donated E1,500 for an artificial leg for a boy from Chernobyl. The boy had the leg fitted in the Republic where he is on holiday. Other drivers in court were not so lucky, being fined up to .£150 and disqualified for up to three months. It seems that not only does money talk, it can also negotiate its way out of any inconvenient disqualifications that might come along.
