I NTRODUCED to meet the needs of power units handling loads in the 40tons-plus class, a new gearbox to take 650 lb.-ft. torque has been introduced by David Brown Industries, Ltd. It is available as a five-speed box, described as model 561, or as a 10-speed unit (model 561a) with an integrally mounted twospeed epicyclic train.
As it is designed particularly for overseas requirements, the basic unit has a left-hand gear-change, but it can be made suitable for right-hand-drive chassis by being mounted in the inverted position. Model 561 weighs 71 cwt. All gears are in constant mesh, single-helical gears being used for forward speeds and spur gears for the reverse train.
A full power take-off can be provided when required. Special clutch arrangements enable the reverse-shaft extension to be used for this purpose, so rotation in each direction can easily be selected. Provision is made for the latest electromagnetic speedometer and a final spurgear drive gives a simple means for adjusting the ratio to suit any particular application.
NEW REAR-ENGINED 42-SEATER
REVOLUTIONARY body styling is a feature of the latest Polish passengervehicle prototype—the Sanok. This fear-engined integral design has 42 seats, the rear eight facing backwards to give a view through the large wrapround rear windows. The engine is housed in a projecting " bonnet " and the unit is mounted longitudinally, in unit with a five:speed, overdrive-top gearbox.
At present the prototype is running with a six-cylindered petrol engine, similar to that used in the San bus (The Commercial Motor, February 14), but it is possible that either a B.M.C. or Perkins oil engine may be used in production vehicles.
Conventional semi-elliptic springs are employed, and 8.25-20-in. tyres are used. The hydraulic braking system has a vacuum servo. The Sanok, which weighs 5i tons unladen, is 3,1 ft. long, 8 ft. 3 in. wide and 8 ft. 81 in. high. The wheelbase is 15 ft, 6 in.
Up to 650 lb. of luggage can be stowed under the body floor between the axles. The two-pieee entrance door can be operated only from the inside, and the driver has a separate small door. The cooling-air ducts, taken from the front of the bus, pass through these doors.
