YOUR REPORT on the 1980 commercial vehicle market (CM, January 17, page 4) was incorrect in stating that only Hestair Dennis and some other British builders recorded increased sales in the over 3.5-tonne gvw sector.
The SMMT's figures clearly show that sales of Renault vehicles rose to 525 in 1980 compared with the 496 registered the previous year. This cannot be regarded as anything other than a modest increase, but it is significant in that Renault was the only major manufacturer to sell more trucks last year.
May we also point out that the overall figures referred to in this context (79,856 down to 61,301) include all trucks and artics, nol simply those above 3.5 tonnes. The sector up to 3.5 tonnes gvw accounted for 2,625 registrations. in 1980 and 2,694 in 1979.
