QLOW-MOVING vehicles will be con
voyed through the Mersey Tunnel at off-peak periods, mainly during the night, and reduced tolls may be offered to induce heavy haulage concerns to keep out during the rush hours. This was decided in Liverpool on Monday at a special meeting of the Mersey Tunnel Joint Committee, which is to introduce widespread changes in the handling of traffic.
The changes are expected to come into effect shortly before Christmas.
DOUBLE-DECKERS FOR EXCURSIONS
THE South Wales Traffic Commis sioners, sitting at Swansea on Tuesday, authorized South Wales Transport Co., Ltd., to use double-deckers on a number of tours from Llanelly, Neath, Swansea and Pontardawe. Operation is to be limited to roads which are already traversed by double-decker stage services.
SOLD VEHICLE NOW BACK
PiA COMPANY which had to sell one of its four vehicles because of the credit squeeze, was granted a new one in its place before the Western Licensing Authority, Mr. S. W. Nelson, in Bristol on Monday.
Jennings Transport; Ltd., of Blagdon. Somerset, sought two additional vehicles. British Road Services, British Railways, and two private hauliers objected. Mr. Nelson was told that ,becaus'e of the credit squeeze Jennings had to. sell one of their four special A-licence vehicles. The ,three vehicles• left could not cope with the amount of work being offered.
HALF-GRANT
PARTIAL success attended an application by Caledon Distributors, Ltd., of Broxburn, East Lothian, .when they applied to the Scottish Licensing Authority, in Edinburgh, on Monday, for a new A licence for six vehicles,
The company called evidence that the work was entirely new business, that the railhead nearest to the plant concerned, was three miles away, and that road transport was, in any case, preferred. The British Transport Commission objected to the application. The Authority. Mr. W. F. Quin, granted three vehicles.
BALLROOM BUSES
THE South Wales Transport Co., Ltd., and United Welsh Services, Ltd., have been authorized by the Soinh Wales Traffic Commissioners to run joint services from seven Swansea ballrooms to various parts of the town. A flat fare of .2s. will be collected by the managements of the ballrooms in question.
