• A combined police and Department of Transport operation on the M6 motorway led to six foreign lorry drivers, three Frenchmen, one Dutchman, a Czechoslovakian and an Irishman, appearing before a special sitting of the Charley Magistrates, charged with a variety of offences. Five of the drivers were fined a total of £575, while the hearing of charges against the sixth was adjourned until November.
The offences found during "Operation Intercept" related to breaches of drivers' hours and tachograph regulations, ant the use of overloaded and defective vehicles.
A number of vehicles were prohibited by DTp vehicle examiners, with necessary repairs carried out before they were allowed to proceed.
Chief Inspector Graham Butler, head of the Lancashire Police Motorway Group, says that such checks will be made regularly.
