A N application has been made by Liverpool Corporation for consent to operate in St. Helens, Whiston and Prescot. • ' , •
A short time ago,. St. Helens Corporation applied suceesilully, 'for' consents for certain road's on the Southdene housin-g estate, near Kirkby, on the outskirts of Liverpool. These two applications mark the culmination of • a struggle for a new Southdene-St. Helens route, via Kirkby, Knowsley and Presccit. . This started when St. Helens applied for consent to operate in Knowsley .and Southdene. Liverpool Corporation; objected, and the application concerning Southdene was refused, but that in respect of Knowsley was granted. . St. Helens then' sought a new service from St. Helens to Kirkby only, via Prescot and Knowsley,. and Liverpool applied for a Prescot-Southdene service.. Ribble Motor Services, Ltd.,. also applied for a service on similar lines to the St. Helens application (ThrCommeiciar Molar, August 21, 19541, but it was not to be -run jointly with
St. Helens. • • , Each operator objected to the
cation of the other, except that Ribble' did not object to the Liverpool aPPlication. The North Western Licensing. Authority 'advised the applicants to resolve their differences and the three applications were held over. The recent applications for consent by Liverpool and St. Helens suggest' that difficulties have been overcome, and a new joint service is likely to be operated by the three parties. • St. Helens Corporation already run into Liverpool jointly with other operators; but Liverpool Corporation do not participate in any of these services: The" new service, if granted, would be the first joint working by St. Helens and
Liverpool. .
COACHES CUT RAIL DEMAND SAYS R.R. WITNESS .. ,
DEMAND.for the railway service from Rotherham to Yarmouth had ' dropped because of road competition, a " witness for British Railways told the Yorkshire Licensing Authority on Monday. W. Smart and Co., Ltd., and Messrs. Cecil Riley jointly applied to operate express carriages from Rawmarsli to Yarmouth, with picking. up points at Parkgate and Rotherham. The railways, Sheffield United Tours, Ltd., and Leon Motor Services, Ltd., objected.
Mr. Riley said that he had filed a similar application in 1953, but withdrew it when the railways said that they intended to run a through train to give Rotherham a better service. The train had never run, he said. The railway witness replied that a train was run on July 24 last year, leaving Rotherham at midnight. It carried only 80 passengers. Decision was reserved.
