AS a driver for 35 years without an accident of any consequence, my views on the proposal to raise the legal speed limit for the " heavies " are as follows:—
(1) A heavy lorry is as safe as a light one at 30 m.p.h., and without a load it is actually safer, for it holds the road better when a quick pull-up is required.
(2) I do not recommend 30 m.p.h. when a trailer is being used.
(3) If 30 m.p.h. is allowed for heavy vehicles, all but those that are new should be required to pass an official brake test in order to qualify for the increase.
(4) All the drivers of heavy lorries allowed to travel al, 30 m.p.h. should have an increase of wages.
(5) Drivers of all road vehicles should drive in such a manner that, whatever happens, they can stop without hitting anything. This has always been my policy.
