HAULIERS using the Windermere I ferry this summer should find the service much improved following the conversion of the cable ferry " Drake " from steam to diesel oropulsion by Leyland Motors, Ltd. Trials indicate that fuel costs will be reduced from about 12,500 a year to £300, whilst crossing time has been reduced from seven to three minutes.
Two Leyland-Ajax 5.75-litre Amazon marine diesels tran'smit power through a duplicate hydrostatic-transmission system using Dowty components. This system enabled compact machinery to be installed.
